State of the Game Announcement

Good evening, Joyers!

As many of you know, two out of three of the mods are RL married and recently I (Laure) underwent major surgery that took both Ari and I out of pocket for the most part. And while I had honestly expected to make a swift recovery and bounce right back into the swing of things online… that has not been the case.

It’s been nearly two months now and while some aspects of my recovery have gone well, I’m still struggling quite a bit with many others. It’s a slow-going process and one that is unavoidable. Because Ari has been so focused on helping with my recovery in addition to her thesis and prepping to test and apply to a Master’s program/re-joining the workforce, we have been forced to look at what we can realistically manage both in our daily lives and our hobbies – and, in the end, we’ve realized that we just do not have the time or capacity to mod the game in the way we designed it.

Because of this, we’ve decided to close Overjoyed.

However! This is NOT an immediate closing. We’ve spoken with Elise in-depth over the last few weeks, trying to determine the best course of action to take, to not deny closure to the amazing player-base we’ve had the pleasure of working and writing with.

Elise has agreed to remain as a ‘coordinating mod’ so that all current players can continue to complete their personal plotlines. She (with our help) will release a summary prompt montly, based upon what players report (as in the AC system), in order to keep the story moving. So! Our plan moving forward is this:

~We will close all applications.
~There will be no new Test Drive Memes.
~AC/regain purchases are no longer required. These items now only require a check-in with the mod (Elise).
~Players will have the next several months to complete their own personal story lines.
~Any major setting impacting plans will still need to be brought to Elise so she can coordinate player plots.

…We know this may seem abrupt, and we do sincerely apologize for that. We had considered alternatives to closing, but in truth… Overjoyed was a gift to me, created almost entirely by my wife, so that we’d have a place to RP with others in a setting we were both interested in… and I’ll admit a degree of selfishness in that I don’t want to hand her creation over to anyone else. You’ve all been amazing as players and we’ve greatly appreciated the time we’ve had together, but in the end, we must take our (or more specifically my) health into consideration and focus for a time on just getting well. Hopefully, once they can stabilize my health, we’ll be able to return to the fold in some shape or form, but until then, we thank you for your time, your effort, your inspiration, and (hopefully) your forgiveness and understanding.

Laure, Ari, & Elise

The importer has (mostly) caught up!

Our content importer has mostly caught up with its backlog; almost everything that's still listed as being "in the queue" are jobs that were tried, failed once or more with a temporary failure, and are waiting to try again. (The importer tries a few times, at successively longer intervals, when it gets a failure it thinks might be temporary/might correct itself later on.) This means that new imports scheduled now should complete in hours (or even minutes), not the "several days" it's been taking.

If you tried to schedule a second import while the first one was still running, at any time in the past 10 days or so, you may have confused the poor thing. If you think your import should be finished by now and it isn't, and you're seeing "Aborted" on the Importer Status part of the Importer page, feel free to open a support request in the Importer category and we'll look into it for you. (It may take a little bit before you get a response; those of us who have the access to look into importer problems have been really busy for the past two weeks or so, and I at least need a few days to catch my breath a bit before diving back into the fray! But we'll do what we can.)

I hope all y'all are continuing to settle in well to your new home!

Hello there! This is a late intro, because I am a horrible person who sucks at intros! Yay! My name is Megan and you can find me at [ profile] mercurialfelines, and I'm new here bringing you Magnus Chase from the ever expanding Rick Riordan mythos.

Magnus is the star of his own trilogy, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, so as you might guess he's the son of a Norse god, and also cousin to Annabeth Chase. His dad is Frey, the god of summer and lord of elves and what not. He is a 16yo undead viking warrior who lives in an undead viking warrior hotel, and has a talking sword.

In Overjoyed, he's two years established (so he's 18 now), and is a RAC-retained medic, which means he is a good person to go to if you're a killjoy who's been stabbed or whatever. He operates mostly out of a ship he shares with his sister Annabeth, who is an info broker/warrant whatever, so they're your one stop shop for info and medical attention. Yay!

His app is here and because I'm late trash his plot comment is here! I just didn't want to be that one guy who didn't do an ooc post don't look at me, look away,

Who: Hawke and Angel
When: W9D2
Medium: Text
Security/Encryption: very high, unhackable untraceable
Warnings: none

[The vivid dreams (nightmares) that had been plaguing Angel for the past few weeks had finally ceased, but in their stead came a wealth of questions. Especially after this.

Since putting up her anonymous post, Angel had been stuck on a particular name: Hawke. She had seen it before, multiple times, she was sure, and something whispers in the back of her mind that she's also heard it spoken, introduced. And so she began looking.

The initial search brings up the obvious, Hawke's general profile (a high ranking level 3 RAC with an unfortunate history of being in the right place at the wrong time, or visa versa. Hailed from station Kirkwall but now resides on Westerly. Network history indicates she loses her dog a lot.) where Angel stops to observe the crooked smile staring back at her in Hawkes registered photo. It's a face she knows, not from any personal encounter, but she's sure it was one she saw in a recent dream. That starts to bring things together, with both the question of how she's been dreaming about real people she's never been in contact with, and a convenient in with one of those people as herself rather than an AI, giving her the ability to ask questions pertaining to a human girl that her other self cannot ask.

And so, through deeply encrypted channels that will guarantee the message cannot be traced, she pings:]

This is going to sound strange, but I believe I saw you in a dream despite never meeting or knowing of you until you responded to my post. There were spiders, and flying arrows, and you. I cannot remember all the details, but this may be a key piece to doing so. Because if you remember something similar, it means this was a shared experience.

Hello, Dreamwidth! Goodness, this past week has been unexpectedly exciting, hasn't it? A warm Dreamwidth welcome to everyone who's just joining us: we're glad you're here, and we hope you're liking the new digs.

Before we get into all the things I have to cover, though: Given the reasons most people are citing for not wanting to agree to LiveJournal's new ToS, I'd like to take a moment and ask: if you're able to (and only if you're able!), please consider donating to the Russian LGBT Network/Российская ЛГБТ-сеть. They not only do excellent work across the Russian Federation, but are currently mobilizing to help evacuate LGBT people in Chechnya who are in danger of detention or death. (EDIT: If you're outside Russia, you can donate through All Out; the Russian LGBT Network website won't accept donations from outside Russia.)

To our friends in Russia who are LGBT and those who are against the mistreatment of anyone because of their sexual orientation: We stand with you. Please stay safe above all else, but if it would be safe for you to post that link, the LGBT Network is asking that as many people as possible publicly share the information that the LGBT Network is ready to help. (They also ask that you do not contact people in Chechnya directly to let them know, as there are reports the authorities are searching people's phones and computers for evidence of sexual orientation.)

The rest of this post is primarily to give y'all new folks a brief orientation (or as brief as I am ever capable of; no one has ever called me concise) to help you settle in, although I hope at least some of it will be useful (or at least interesting!) to those of you who have been with us for a while. Come with me as we discuss Dreamwidth's history, a bit of what (we think) makes us special, the answers to a few common questions about how we roll, and a few useful tips that may help you with the transition.

Dreamwidth 101! )

Whew! That was a lot to throw at y'all at once, I know. (Yes, I always am this longwinded. And I always use this many parentheses.) Everybody who's been here for a while: thank you for your patience as I got our new arrivals up to speed! We'll be back in a few weeks with a code push and a bunch of new features and fixes, so the next news post should be more broadly applicable.

In the meantime, let's have a welcome party in the comments:

* If you're looking for new people to subscribe to you, leave a comment with some basic info about your journal and what you tend to write about! Then everybody can browse around and meet each other. (There's also [community profile] 2017revival and [community profile] addme, both of which are unofficial but bustling lately; holler if you know of any more.)

* If you've been here for a while and have a favorite community that's active, drop a link and a brief description!

* If you're new or you've been here for a while, and you're looking for an active community on a particular topic, leave a comment with what you're looking for and people can recommend you some options. (We've done this a few times before, as "the great community rec-o-matic", and it's never a bad time for another round.)

* If you know of any scripts, resources, extensions, tools, or toys that will help someone make the move, get settled in, or customize their DW experience once they're here, drop a link and a description in the comments. (We can't be responsible for unofficial tools, scripts, extensions, etc, so use at your own risk, but I know there are a bunch of them floating around!)

Finally, a quick note on the importer queue: it's still going, I swear. The jobs finishing now are the ones that were scheduled around 48 hours ago, though, so we really appreciate how patient y'all are being!

As always, if you're having problems with Dreamwidth, Support can help you; for notices of site problems and downtime, check [site community profile] dw_maintenance and the Twitter status account. (We can't do support through Twitter, though! Open a support request instead. Me trying to fit into 140 characters is not a pretty sight.)

Comment notifications may be delayed for an hour or two, due to the high volume of notifications generated after an update is posted to [site community profile] dw_news. This was posted at 5:30AM EDT (see in your time zone). Please don't worry about delayed notifications until at least two hours after that.

With the Quad in a state of uncertain change, it is imperative that we all do what we can to remain unified. Whether you live for money, for your family, or for your future, no one benefits from unmitigated chaos and organized hatred.

Please, share here your woes, your triumphs - any stories you have to offer from recent days in your lives. Together, we can offer an understanding of the Quad that no individual could ever possess alone. Through a picture painted in all colors - Company, Resistance, Leithan, Westerlyn - we can find an image of our common goal.

Speak to one another. Ask for help. Offer condolences. Seek common ground.

We're all in this together.
